Massage Experience

Thursday, 28 June 2012

I was recently kindly offered to try out a massage deal in Birmingham by the lovely people at Wahanda. I was rather spoilt for choice as there are tonnes of deals to pick from. In the end, I opted for the 1 hour deep tissue massage* at 'At One Day Spa', as it is close to where I live, had great reviews and had a 4.5 out of 5 star rating on Wahanda.

'At One Day Spa' is tucked away in the Great Western Arcade in Birmingham City Centre. If you weren't paying attention, you would probably miss it. I actually initially walked past it and had to go back! When I arrived, the first thing I noticed about the spa was the Far Eastern theme. There was relaxing music throughout, Buddha statues and lots of vibrant purple hues. I was led upstairs and kindly offered a drink on arrival before being handed a health questionnaire to fill out before my treatment. The ambience of the spa was relaxing and it was nice that the spa was upstairs away from the hustle and bustle of the city centre.

The therapist I had was called Maria. She instructed me on how to get ready and told me lay down on the massage table. Before doing so, I took a sneaky picture of the treatment room. As you can see, the Eastern theme continues in the decor and the massage table was super comfortable. I have never had a massage before, so I wasn't sure what to expect. I did feel quite self conscious and rather exposed to begin with, but as soon as the massage started, all my worries melted away. I felt so relaxed throughout the massage and I have to admit, I may have fallen asleep a little... The best bit of the massage was when Maria did my upper back and neck. I think I hold a lot of tension there from uni life (on clinics), the gym and my poor posture so it was nice to have that area massaged to release any tension. There wasn't any talking throughout the massage as I think it would detract away from the relaxing atmosphere and personally, I prefer this as I am not a fan of making awkward small talk. I left feeling completely relaxed and happy. When I left, my skin was a little oily from the massage oil as it hadn't sunk into my skin completely, but over the course of the day, it sunk in and left my skin feeling soft.

I honestly don't have anything bad to say about my experience and I would definitely recommend 'At One Day Spa' to anyone that wants to be pampered. I am officially a convert and will definitely be treating myself to more massages or spa deals from Wahanda in the future.

Have you ever had a massage before?

Thank you for reading. xoxo, Joy

*I was kindly offered to review a massage deal by Wahanda. This does not change my opinion and as always, my reviews are 110% honest.

  1. This sounds like a great massage. I have one or two massages a year as a treat and i love them - my neck and shoulders always feel a bit achy and a massage definitely sorts them out! x

  4. I instantly wanted to have a massage after reading your post! Aside from the massage itself, the ambiance completes the serene mood of your experience. Deep tissue massage is a good choice. It relieves body tension and helps improve blood pressure. We all love the feeling of rejuvenation after a long stressful day, and they certainly gave you that much with that massage.

  6. It’s important to take a day off and pamper yourself with a nice spa or massage. It’ll help rejuvenate your body, promote blood flow, just enough to refresh and restore your good health, and good mood. You can also try chiropractic care. It can help to alleviate pain brought about by long hours of working and stress. Always find ways to take care of yourself!

  7. You really had a great time, eh? Massage is my grand escape from the stress of life – from relieving muscle tension to fostering peace of mind. It actually boosts awareness of mind-body connection. Kind regards, Joy! =)

  8. I just had a massage a while ago, and I can still feel the sweet release of tension and stress until now. I regularly go to my therapist, as, aside from relaxing the body, a massage session also significantly helps prevent impairments, disabilities, and functional limitations by simple disabling risk factors. =)

  9. The ambiance is very relaxing, and for me, that is one of the most important aspects of a massage salon. The furniture, color theme, and the lighting all set a soothing mood, which contributes a lot to the emotional and mental relaxation of a person’s mind and body.

  10. Hi Joy, have you tried aromatherapy? If not, then I strongly suggest that you do! Last week, I just had my first aromatherapy session, and I loved it! The aromatic oils are so relaxing and rejuvenating. I’ve learned from my PT that it also eases menstrual cramps.

  11. You should treat your body to a good massage every once in a while. A good ambiance and wonderful customer service, what else can you ask for? The “magic of touch” in massage can help to relieve your body of stress and replace it with a feeling of pleasure and comfort, rejuvenating your body. Have a break, have a massage. :)

  12. Reading this wonderful experience of yours sounds relaxing, and I think it’s about time to make this a regular habit. Why not bring your friends along with you? They’ll like the session and probably ask for more! By the way, that spa is beautiful! It’s like a first-class massage room that we usually see in high-class hotels. =)

    1. I'd love to make it a regular habit, but being a student makes it difficult and it has to be more of a luxury. Maybe when I start working. Yes, it was lovely in there! x
